struck by a laser) makes tumors appear bright in the SWIFTI display.

The Faster Smoke Alarm
The Smart Smoke Alarm is a new residential smoke alarm that alarms
faster and more reliably than existing alarms. It uses sensors developed
by smoke-alarm manufacturers (ionization aerosol, photoelectric aerosol,
carbon monoxide and temperature) and combines their responses in
a synergistic fashion with embedded firmware. As a result, the Smart
Smoke Alarm alarms more quickly to actual fires and keeps quiet during
nonthreatening situations that trigger conventional smoke alarms (e.g.,
cooking and showering). The Smart Smoke Alarm also incorporates an
inexpensive speaker and circuit to produce a more effective alarming
sound (520 Hz).

Precise Endoscopic Surgery
Half a million Americans suffer from spinal disorders from the normal
degenerative aging process. Lower back pain/extremity numbness is
frequently caused by the degenerative condition known as lumbar spinal
stenosis: the narrowing of the spinal canal caused by the overgrowth
of ligamentum flavum. StenAIR Laserscope can be used to treat this
ailment and significantly reduce surgical cost, hospital stays and patient
recovery. Through use of the StenAIR, the surgeon can perform a
procedure with no destruction to the surrounding bone and back muscle
via an outpatient procedure instead of open-back surgery. It allows the
surgeon to perform very precise endoscopic surgery within the spinal
canal via a naturally existing access port near the base of the sacrum. The
most immediate application of this technology is to treat spinal stenosis
as an outpatient procedure. Other surgeries requiring the precise removal
of material within the spinal canal will also benefit from this technology.

UXI (Ultra-Fast X-Ray Imager) is a solid-state digital camera that
captures a sequence of images with user-selectable exposure times as
short as two billionths of a second. This is 25 times faster than has
been previously achieved with digital imaging technology. The camera
also uses a nearly half-megapixel solid-state photosensor array that
directly records X-rays, visible light or particles. The combined high
sensitivity and multi-frame capability enables a UXI camera to be used
with advanced X-ray and optical microscopes for imaging transient
phenomena on the microscale. The UXI was developed to enable
scientists to study the heating and compression of fusion targets in the
quest to harness the energy processes that power the stars.

Vapor-Phase Identification and Detection of Explosives and
Narcotics Technology (VP-IDENT) is an instrument that, when
coupled with a mass spectrometer, identifies vapors of explosives and
narcotics in the air in real time at levels previously undetectable by
any other sampling technology. Discovering dangerous substances like
these is a critical need for aviation security, cargo screening and broader
counter-terrorism and national security activities. VP-IDENT provides
reliable, real-time, non-contact detection of explosives and narcotics
with no particle collection. The technology has been demonstrated in
laboratory tests to detect even hard-to-identify explosives compounds
such as RDX, PETN, nitroglycerine and tetryl, along with plastic
explosives that contain these materials.
