Portable NMR Spectrometer
Thermo Fisher Scientific has
introduced the picoSpin
80, a portable NMR spectrometer built for benchtop
operation in academic and
industrial laboratories for the
easy collection of routine,
high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data
on molecules in solution. The instrument's magnet, rated at 2 T, is designed to provide high
resolution of chemical and structural characteristics not available using lower magnetic field
strengths. The picoSpin 80 spectrometer features and benefits include: a temperature-con-trolled magnet that doesn't require liquid cryogens; a lightweight, portable design intended to
make it easy to share the instrument across multiple laboratories and an easy-to-operate capillary system that doesn't require NMR tubes or other consumables. Visit Thermo Fisher Scientific
at Pittcon booth #2441 for more information on the picoSpin 80.
SEC-MALS Detector for UHPLC
Wyatt Technology Corp. will
launch the µDAWN at Pit-
tcon 2014. The µDAWN is
a multi-angle light scattering
(MALS) detector that can be
coupled to a UHPLC system
in order to determine absolute
molecular weights and sizes
of polymers, peptides and
proteins or other biopolymers
directly, without column cali-
bration or reference standards.
µDAWN connects to the Optilab UT-rEX, a refractive index detector for UHPLC. In order to
accommodate the narrow peaks produced by UHPLC separation, µDAWN engineers reduced
the conventional light scattering flow cell volume from 63 µL to less than 10 µL. µDAWN also
minimizes interdetector mixing; the band broadening between the µDAWN MALS and Optilab
UT-rEX detectors was brought to under 7 µL, while the band broadening between the UHPLC’s
UV detector and the µDAWN detector is 2 µL. Expanding the versatility of the µDAWN is the
WyattQELS dynamic light scattering (DLS) module. The embedded accessory measures DLS
in the µDAWN flow cell simultaneously with MALS acquisition, computing hydrodynamic radii
on-the-fly. The detector also features a color touchscreen front panel display which shows the
chromatographic conditions, instrument diagnostics and more. Visit Wyatt Technology Corp. at
Pittcon booth #3554 for more information on the µDAWN.

Waters Acquity QDa detector is a small, easy-to-use mass detector that brings high-quality
mass spectral data to chromatographic separations. With on/off simplicity, the Acquity QDa
detector fully automates sample analysis and eliminates sample-specific adjustments for certainty in sample results, from user to user and system to system. Robust and reliable enough
for routine use, when paired with a Waters UPLC, LC or SFC system, the detector generates
the high-quality mass spectral data expected of a single-quadrupole mass spectrometer in a mass
detector no larger than, and as easy to use as, a photodiode array (PDA) detector. Visit Waters at Pittcon booth #3648 for more information on the Acquity QDa detector.

Vacuum Controller Detects Boiling Point
Vacuubrand's CVC3000 detect programmable benchtop vacuum controller regulates
laboratory vacuum applications to increase
process efficiency, protect samples and save
scientists time. The CVC3000 is a free-standing vacuum controller that can automatically
detect a boiling point and hold vacuum at that
level. The controller is ready for use with any
vacuum pump operating in the rough vacuum
range between 0.1 mbar/Torr and atmospheric pressure. It is programmable with up to 10
10-step programs, in addition to the detect
function. Programming on the unit is intuitive
using the graphical display, text menus in
selectable languages and vacuum units and
the turn-and-tap jog wheel for data entry.
Communication with a data acquisition system via the standard RS-232C port supports
program download, data collection or integration with automated systems. The CVC3000
detect is available in a benchtop model or
equipped for mounting to laboratory scaffolding. The controller uses a capacitive vacuum
sensor and chemical-resistant solenoid valve
to provide vacuum application control in the
range from 0.1 mbar to 1,080 mbar. Visit
Vacuubrand at Pittcon booth #3936 for more
information on the CVC3000 detect.
